RAZ KIDS
As part of our Reading program, each child has been given access to the on-line reading program, Raz Kids.  Each week students will be asked to read books on this program, with some school time given during computer labs.  Whenever possible, I will ask students to read and record one book each week for teacher evaluation and comments.   These recordings help me to assist your child becoming a better reader.  I also encourage students to use the listening component to this program, so that they can emulate and copy what they are hearing.  I hope that you and your child enjoy this program.

THANK YOU!
It has been a pleasure to spend time with you discussing the growth and expectations of your children.  Thank you to all families for taking the time to meet yesterday and today for the  PTMs.  I do understand how busy life is, and appreciate your time.

CULTURAL PERFORMANCE
Today we had Sheldon Cassauant, a magician and illusionist come to McGowan to perform.  The performance was outstanding as his skills were amazing.  Mr. Cassauant was interested in magicians like Harry Houdini, performing many of the same tricks that the famous Harry Houdini demonstrated.  My personal favourites were the levitating table and escape from the straight jacket.  Mr. Cassauant was able to get out of the straight jacket in 60 seconds, in addition to creating a balloon animal in that time.  Outstanding!  Some skills that Mr. Cassauant encouraged students to focus on were finding something that you are interest in doing, locating resources in the library, and practicing your skills until they are perfect.  I hope that your child enjoyed the show as much as I did.  You can find out more information at www.sheldoncassauant.com

X COUNTRY RUN OPPORTUNITY
Both Grade 3 & 4 students are eligible to participate in up-coming x-country runs.  These runs usually take place outside of regular class time.  Students are asked to sign-up on the bulletin board by the library.  Further information/permission slips to come for participants.

The first run is September 19 -  OLPH run  at McArthur Island.
The second run is the Billy Goat Run on September 21 at Dufferin.

GRADE 4 PARENT MEETING
We would like to invite the Grade 4 parents to a Grade 4 meeting next Wednesday, September 19 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm.  This meeting is to help inform parents of changes from the primary to intermediate program.  We hope that you will be able to make it.

Homework
It is my beleif that if students are working hard and using their time wisely they deserve to complete their 'working day' at school.  Therefore, I usually do not 'assign' additional 'homework'.  Students will be expected to do nightly home reading, review math skills practise (fact families) and Spelling lists.  Additional review work may also include review for Quizzes or Tests.

Home Reading
Students are requested to read nightly with an adult.  Although your child is an independent reader, a major focus of the Grade 3/4 program is to improve comprehension.  Reading aloud with your child provides excellent modelling of reading as well as comprehension when you summarize key ideas.  Listening to your child allows you to hear your child, assisting where needed.

Can You Help?
1. Cold & Flu Season: Could you donate a box of kleenex for classroom use?
2. Framing Talent? Do you know how to frame art work?  Would you be willing to help our class?  If so, could you please see Ms. Pawliuk

Grade 4 Opportunity - STRINGS PROGRAM
Today, Mrs. Zahir visited our classroom.  As part of the District's music program, Mrs. Zahir teaches strings (violin/cello) twice weekly, during school session, to student who choose to participate.  There is no cost to families for Mrs. Zahir's instruction.  Students are expected to rent instruments (Long & McQuade), purchase a method book (music book), practise nightly (20 minutes), as well as show up prepared for classes (instruments & method book).

There will be several concerts throughout the year for family members to enjoy.  If your family is interested in having your child participate in the Strings Program, please return the Strings Permission Slip to Ms. Pawliuk as soon as possible.  Please go to Long and McQuade with your child to have them sized for rental.  We are anticipating sessions starting near the end of September.  Days of instruction will be posted when Mrs. Zahir's schedule is confirmed.

SPELLING - SKILLS FOR STUDENT SUCCESS - STUDY TIPS
In your child’s agenda is their spelling list for this week. Encourage him or her to practise the words in one or more of these ways:
1 . Read and spell each word. Cover it up and write it. Uncover the word and check.   We call this study strategy RCRC (Read, Cover, Recite, Check).
to see if it is correct.
2. Find the words on the spelling list in printed materials such as books
and magazines.
3. Read a word aloud and ask your child to spell it (either aloud or written
on paper).
Thank you for your support of our spelling program.

Water Bottles
I encourage all students to bring a water bottle to school each day to keep well hydrated, which is essential for learning.  If possible, include a bottle with a 'pop lid' to prevent accidents.

Have a great night!  See you tomorrow.  Ms. P.

WELCOME BACK!
Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year!    What a wonderful first week I have had with the students!  Thank you to all of the parents who have so warmly welcomed me to the 2012 school year.  It is very nice to meet you.  I will look forward to meeting more of you as the month progresses.

THANK YOU
Thank you to all families for helping us with our organization.  We appreciate you returning the information from the manila envelope.  If you have not done so, could you return this information as soon as possible?

MS. PAWLIUK'S CORNER
This year I will be working with students each day until noon.  We are still working on the schedule and will let families know when library, computers, as well as PE schedules are.  Students have been asked to bring PE strip as we will have PE in the gym (shirt/shorts/shoes).

September is a month of changes. Today, the Grade 3-4 class had Mr. Bamsey join our class to teach afternoon sessions for  the next two weeks.  We are very much looking forward to having Mr. Ramsey join the McGowan team!

BLOG
Each night I post information for both students and parents to review.  Student review work, project work, or work completion is posted.  Additional information such as up-coming events, community events, or important dates such as student birthdays will also appear.  It is my hope that this information helps families keep organized.

AGENDAS
Students received their agenda books today.  I request that all students fill in their agendas daily.   We try to 'work smarter, not harder', so entries tend to be brief.  Additional information for work review/completion will be found on the blog.  We ask that parents review the blog/agenda entries and initial agendas nightly.  Thank you for your support.
