Salmon Run Field Trip
-Thursday, October 9
Tomorrow is our Salute to the Sockeye field trip.  Thank you to all parent volunteers!! We cannot participate in these field trips without your support.  Thank you for choosing to spend the day with us.

Parents are requested to drive their own vehicles or carpool to the site.  There is pay parking [$5 per car] at the site.  As requested by our principal, all students will ride the school bus to  and from the site.  The bus driver will indicate the time that our group needs to be back and boarding the bus.

Parents please meet by our bus to form groups and be given information/instructions.  Please make sure to get the return boarding time as well as bus number information from me before heading off with your group.
I will give you the names of your group members, a small workbook, as well as a few additional pencils for the books. There are porta-potties for our convenience that you may wish to take your group to throughout the day.

If you are unfamiliar with the route, please follow the school bus.  It will be easy to locate us as at the site.  If you wish to depart earlier, we will meet you at the
Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park. The festival site is located in the main day-use area beside the Adams River. The route is well marked, but you may want to Google directions or use the brief directions below.  The spawning salmon may be viewed in many stretches of the river throughout the park. The new viewing platform will be located within 300 meters of the festival plaza along a well groomed walking trail.

We will leave the school around 8:40 am.  We ask that all students come prepared.  Please include:  a large snack, lunch (please no salmon or tuna fish sandwiches!!), water bottle, jacket, and running shoes.   Most of the terrain is on a pathway, however students are able to go right down to the river, navigating over the rocky shoreline.

Group leaders will be provided with small groups of students for which they are asked to lead throughout our visit.  Students will have a small booklet to work on, however, it is more important that the students are able to observe and experience the wonders of this event.  Please use your knowledge and expertise to guide your group so that they have the best experience possible.

We have an informational session booked as soon as we arrive, however, if there are other educational opportunities available, please use your discretion to lead your group through the day as it will go by quickly.

I hope that you and all students will enjoy this wonderful educational opportunity.  Thank you again, for choosing to spend your day with us.  We appreciate your time.

Home Reading:
A just right book is a book which a child should be able to read with a great deal of independence, however it should not be so easy that there are no challenges.  Just right books should allow the reader to find 2 or 3 challenging words on a full page of text.  If there are more than 3 words, the book is most likely too difficult; less than 2...too easy.   Please help to encourage your child to select just right books.

Home Reading:
As part of our Language Arts program, we have started learning about choosing "just right" books.  This is a very difficult skill which children need to practise throughout their school careers.  A just right book is a book which a child should be able to read with a great deal of independence, however it should not be so easy that there are no challenges.  Today, as a first step to choosing a just right book,  we discussed how just right books should allow the reader to find 2 or 3 challenging words on a full page of text.  If there are more than 3 words, the book is most likely too difficult; less than 2...too easy.   Please help to encourage your child to select just right books.
