Constable Winkles reviewed how important it is to have a SAFETY PLAN for everyday, but especially on nights like Halloween.  Included in today's discussion was:  the importance of knowing mom or dad's phone number (or writing it down in a safe place [inside of shoe], taking a flashlight, going/staying in a group accompanied by an adult, walking safely on sidewalk or grass area, crossing at intersections or designated cross walk, costume/mask safety, and knowing what to do if separated from your group.  Please ask your child to review these skills with you before next Monday!

CAN YOU HELP?
Dear families, today we started using the Chromebook computers.  Many students had great difficulty typing in (spelling) their last names.  Could you please help out by encouraging your child to write their name 10 times as a practice of this very essential skill?  Many thanks in advance.

Could you please send in a pair of earbuds or headphones for your child's use in a labelled zip-lock baggie as soon as possible?  Many thanks!  :-)

Thank you to the many organized families who already sent earbuds/earphones in!!!

Parents are asked to review work and sign.  Logs should be returned to the school as soon as possible.  Most weeks, students will write at the end of the week, however, there may be variations to scheduling.  There is a place for parents to add a comment if desired.  Thank you for your support!

CLASS NEWSLETTER
It is hard to believe that September is almost completed!  We have been working hard to build class routines and expectations for the past four weeks.

Today your child will be bringing home a lengthy class newsletter.  This newsletter is to help you to understand our class's routines and expectations. As much as possible, I try to stick to familiar routines, however, there will be times where routines simply change.

As we enter October, I encourage families to support their child in building independence.  Maria Montessori stated it best:
The greatest sign of success for a teacher... is to be able to say, 'The children are
now working as if I did not exist.’  Never help a child with a task at which he feels
      he can succeed.
Simple tasks such as assisting with packing lunches, putting items into backpacks and ensuring items for the back and forth bag should be part of your child's daily routine.  Don't worry if the job isn't perfect, it's a wonderful learning opportunity!

Students are encourage to enter and leave the school unassisted, so that they can independently unpack and prepare for the day. This is the beginning of learning how to organize items as well as time.  These small steps are the building blocks of future success!  I appreciate your support in getting your child started, and look forward to assisting them through the school year.

Reminders:
Friday, Sept. 30 - TERRY FOX RUN - 9:15 am all welcome ;-)

Let's have a great week.  See you tomorrow!

SPEAKING & LISTENING
Today your child will be bringing home a folder for the Speaking and Listening topic of the month.  This task is in place of traditional show and tell and addresses many skills in the Language Arts Program.

Each month, your child will be asked to speak to a specific topic, providing three details about the topic, as well as an introduction and close.  Students may bring an item to 'show' (picture, small item, etc.) that supports their topic.  Please only send non-precious items!

Speaking skills will be sent the week prior to presentation to allow for time to prepare and practice skills.  October's theme is My Favourite Activity.

HOME READING
Thank you to families for so enthusiastically supporting the home reading program.   I appreciate your questions!
  • children should read ALOUD to an adult 10 minutes or more nightly
  • log in blue duotang (you don't need to return the log each day)
  • BOOKS MUST come BACK TO SCHOOL each day; we re-read the book to our reading buddy for fluency and comprehension practice.
  • parents are requested to read a novel aloud each night to model great reading skills!  :-)
I will collect and review reading logs on students SPEAKING AND LISTENING DAY.

Reminders:
Friday, Sept. 30 - TERRY FOX RUN - 9:15 am all welcome ;-)

Let's have a great week.  See you tomorrow!
